Miss Porter's House, now a National Trust (NSW) property, was the family home of the Porter's from 1910 to 1997 - Herbert, Florence and their children Ella and Hazel.
Discover homemade clothing and textiles of that period. See exquisite crochet, lace and embroidered household linens. Also amazing craft work - stencilling and basket making to name two - that often won awards, having been made by Ella and Hazel. Florence excelled in crochet and embroidery.
See a treadle sewing machine from 1910. Spot manikins dressed in clothing worn by Ella and Hazel. Wonder how laundry was undertaken in that period before a modern washing machine was installed in the 1990s.
For much of the 20th Century women's work also involved making-over and mending. Visitors can see repurposed clothing, the mending and darning of yesteryear and the creative use of fabrics.
